Siena – Excursions from Certaldo
Among the most visited cities of art in Italy, Siena is famous for its Palio.
Already known by the Etruscans, founded by the Romans, it has as symbol the she-wolf with suckling twins, to seal the close tie with Rome.
Ghibelline city, it undertaken bloody struggles against the Guelph Florence, that at last led it under the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
The dark alleys converge, with surprising effect, at the Piazza del Campo, a jewel in valve-shell shape that is set among the noble palaces, the Town hall and the Torre del Mangia. On the square, through the Fonte Gaia of Jacopo della Quercia, a cold water gushes, flowing from the legend from the Diana, underground river on which the city would be based.
Divided into 17 ‘contradas’, each with its own chapel, Siena offers a dip in the middle ages of rare intensity on July 2 with the Palio of Provenzano and on August 16 with the Palio of the Assumption: exciting horse racings on the Piazza del Campo.
Extraordinary: the Cathedral, the Cathedral Museum, with the Majesty of Duccio di Buoninsegna, Santa Maria della Scala, an ancient hospital and refuge for pilgrims, today museum area among the biggest in Europe.
If Siena is famous, so are its hills. A few kilometers from Siena, in Certaldo, the native city of Boccaccio, in strategic and panoramic location, you will find the ideal base for your tours to discover the Chianti shire in the old mill that is now the Hotel Certaldo: a charming residence for an unforgettable holiday in Tuscany.
