When it’s carnival time ….…!

When it’s carnival time anything prank goes…!

… did you know that…

… The word “Carnival” means “remove the meat” referring to the last carnival banquet right before Lent period when people used to fast …

… “Confetti” is an Italian word coming from the tradition to launch in the air some small sweets during weddings’ and other parties but in Italian they are called “coriandoli” and confetti are only bonbons used for important celebrations …

The first “carnival wagon” was built in Viareggio in 1873 by some harbor workers. They used the same material for ships’ building : ropes, steel cables, hoists … it wasn’t an easy moving and light wagon!

… In this period if you go to Galaxidi in Greece don’t forget to bring with you lots of clothing! During carnival they used to launch coloured flour and not confetti! Nobody can avoid it, visitors, passersby ect… only statues are covered with plastic protections …

In Italy every year are produced about 20.000 tons of tipical sweets: chiacchiere, bugie, frittelle, frappe and castagnole … what about the diet after Christmas time?!

… The characters described by Boccaccio in his “Decamerone” are become carnival characters… Viareggio’s official mask is in fact Burlamacco that comes from Buffalmacco created by the poet from Certaldo.

… In Mentone, in France, a special area for the production of citrus, usually takes place the “Lemon festival”: huge and fragrant carnival wagons completely covered by lemons, oranges, tangerins, cedars etc… lots of C vitamin!

… A man who often used a mask … Giacomo Casanova, a Venetian writer, more famous for its adventures and seducing spirit, always wear its personal mask which guaranteed anonymity during gambling, escapes etc…
